Background of the Study
Cloud computing has revolutionized how businesses, particularly small and medium enterprises (SMEs), manage their information systems. By providing scalable computing resources and reducing the need for large IT infrastructure investments, cloud computing has made it easier for SMEs to adopt advanced technology and improve business efficiency (Gartner, 2023). Cloud-based solutions offer a variety of services, including data storage, software applications, and networking capabilities, all accessible over the internet, allowing businesses to operate more efficiently and flexibly.
In Kano State, SMEs are increasingly adopting cloud computing to streamline their operations, reduce costs, and enhance productivity (Ibrahim & Aliyu, 2024). However, despite the growing popularity of cloud computing, there is limited research on its actual impact on business efficiency, especially in developing regions like Kano. This study seeks to investigate how the adoption of cloud computing affects business efficiency among SMEs in Kano State, particularly in terms of cost savings, operational processes, and customer service delivery.
Statement of the Problem
Although cloud computing holds great promise for enhancing business efficiency, many SMEs in Kano State face challenges in adopting and utilizing cloud services effectively. These challenges include limited technical expertise, concerns over data security, and high initial costs associated with cloud adoption (Akinwale, 2023). This study aims to assess the impact of cloud computing adoption on business efficiency, focusing on whether SMEs in Kano State experience measurable improvements in their operations.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the impact of cloud computing adoption on the operational efficiency of SMEs in Kano State.
2. To identify the key benefits and challenges of adopting cloud computing among SMEs in Kano State.
3. To evaluate the relationship between cloud computing adoption and customer satisfaction in SMEs in Kano State.
Research Questions
1. How does cloud computing adoption affect the operational efficiency of SMEs in Kano State?
2. What are the key benefits and challenges of adopting cloud computing among SMEs in Kano State?
3. How does cloud computing adoption influence customer satisfaction in SMEs in Kano State?
Research Hypotheses
1. H₁: SMEs in Kano State that adopt cloud computing experience higher operational efficiency than those that do not adopt cloud computing.
2. H₂: Cloud computing adoption leads to significant cost reductions in SMEs in Kano State.
3. H₃: The adoption of cloud computing has a positive impact on customer satisfaction in SMEs in Kano State.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on SMEs in Kano State that have adopted cloud computing within the last two years. Data will be collected from business owners, managers, and IT specialists through surveys and interviews. Limitations include the potential for response bias and the challenge of obtaining accurate performance data from small businesses.
